It's the same as car insurance. You have state minimums and can get just collision or comprehensive which also covers repairs to your bike if you caused the wreck (if you consider it cheap and not financed, just get collision). The medical coverage, which your state will require you to get at some level, covers your hospital bills if you are in a wreck before your other health insurance kicks in if you have it. I've always used Geico and collision only, and it runs around $100-125 a year with a clean record. Comparable to adding an extra car and no extra drivers to your policy.

In many states, there are programs where you take a motorcycle safety course, and as part of that course you get your motorcycle license or enforcement. The other option is to have a friend with a motorcycle take you for your test, using their bike.

Without knowing the state, I can not give better answer.

Take a state approved MSF course. If you pass, you will be issued a certificate you then take to the dmv and have the road test waived.

The msf course provides the motorcycle. All you need is a helmet, some gloves, a jacket and pants.

There are also places that rent out small bikes for people to take the test on. Not knowing where you are, I couldn't recommend anywhere.

You take the MSF foundation safety course. Most if not all states waive the riding portion of the test if you have a certificate showing you passed the course.

You take a course. Seems like most places charge $125.
